Why Obama bought into the generals' arguments is a mystery to me, not having been a fly on the Oval Office wall. Perhaps, as a green president, he felt he had to defer to their greater expertise. Escalating in Afghanistan does not come normally to mind like an idea springing from Zeus's head. A certain amount of mental conditioning was required. Obama had to be intellectually prepared to accept such an idea. And one can only wonder. There is a story there. But in the meantime, the world pays the consequences.
