Gingersnaps anyone?

Ginger can be quite versatile as you can see in this Ginger Snap martini recipee:

Put your wallet away, Sir. Your money is no good here.

This round is on the Gentlelady from Vanuatu ;-)

Her treat!

At The Suggestion of Jin

The Gulf Spill Cocktail. From Deep Sea News, and be sure to read comment #1 for an idea on how to make it even more life-like.

Reposted from OTI, with the title "Too Soon?" Any oil spill or other disaster-related drinks? (The recipe for the above actually sounds kind of tasty, but man, that is one ugly drink.)

Where Angels fear to tread

No two creations are the same: garnishes and ingredients come and go over the years, and there may be ten different names for the same cocktail.

This one is known as a Genesis 6:
2 oz Bacardi Limon rum
1 oz Grand Marnier orange liqueur
1 oz Jose Cuervo Especial gold tequila
1 dash cranberry juice
4 oz sweet and sour mix

Mixing Directions:
Over ice in collins glass pour 2 parts lemon rum with one part tequila, dash Grand Marnier, fill with sour mix, then add just a bit of cranberry for blush, cover with shaker, and give it enough shake to froth. Strain into a cocktail glass.

And now for something a bit frivolous

Never enough chocolate?

May I suggest a shot of Gianduia Cioccolato e Grappa?

Gianduia Crema Cioccolato e Grappa is deliciously sweet and chocolatey. It's a cream liqueur based on an old Piemontese recipe that uses chocolate, milk, cream, and hazelnuts, with a grappa base.

3/10 Gianduia Cioccolato e Grappa
3/10 Brandy
2/10 crema cacao
2/10 caffè espresso

Shake.

Do not strain.

Grapefruit Moons

I wouldn't know, sir. Grapefruit diet recipes vary from place to place. Patrons seem to think that it still makes for a decent happy hour special. Not me, sir. I don't drink the stuff, I just mix it.

2 parts vodka, sir,
1 part grapefruit juice,
1/2 part (splash) of Cointreau,
and a slice of grapefruit for garnish.

The gentleman is correct. The song is indeed a parody of Cherry Poppin' Daddies's Zoot Suit Riot.

Dear God

Sarah McLachlan's cover of an XTC song.
I think the lyrics were written by Colin Moulding, XTC's front man and singer It was written by Andy Partidge; their original video can be seen here. Just one problem with the lyrics, though overall brilliant: while it wouldn't make me any more religious, I sure wouldn't mind a big reduction in the price of beer.

Ummm, What Time Is It?

Wednesday already? Guess that means it's time for a drink. I think whatever it is that Jin has been at sounds appealing.
(A most amazing time piece, if you have five minutes to feed the Chronophage)

Wherever you go . . .

. . . there you are:

Myself, I'll be right over here. Enjoying a nice serving of bean curd.

Things have been quiet of late at The Wulfshead, and I like it that way.

Unlike some of the more prissy clientèle of the club---Who are some of those people anyway and how did they ever find their way in here?---I don't mind pouring my own beer.

They say real men don't eat Tofu. But they say so many things [link]. On the other hand, there is hope: if Jorge Chavarro and his team have it right, soy may become one viable solution to the Human overpopulation crisis. (Except that it doesn't look like it has been working that way, so far, in countries such as China or India or Brazil and in other countries where the consumption of soy is high.)

But who cares what they say, the bean curd goes well with the beer.

Besides, it's a specialty of the house.

And...er... And "why is that?" do you ask.

Ahh...it all started with that Guan Di fellow. That guy with the white beard over there, who just stormed in. He has just found out that the bartender is away and he looks rather pissed off about the whole thing. Don't let the haughtiness and all the drama fool you. I know him; there is a kind heart under that fierce appearance. He'll soon calm down and pour himself a drink just like the rest of us.

They say he is some kind of a god, you know.

Don't ask  . . . [cont'd']

Too late!

Maybe he is "the solution to the human overpopulation crisis."

Black is the color

We have always been a little wary of religious zealots. You know, like Saint Gorgeous or the Holy Rollers.

Or The Really Righteous Atheist Brothers.

The Atheist Brothers can be downright boring, actually. If nothing else, there is some measure of entertainment value to Saint Gorgeous or the Holy Rollers. As I always say, if you're going to get religious on me, at least make it fun! I don't know, use your imagination. Ride a funny cubicle car, like the Pope does. Or go skyclad like The Sisters of La Vecchia Religione.

Kali Mystics are alright. As a matter of fact, the bartender fixed one for me, just last night.

I mean, the real thing. None of that Amaretto/Rum/7-up crap they serve in some places.

The bartender actually used black vodka. And while I do usually prefer my drinks on the dry side, I thought the hint of black raspberry liqueur was a nice touch.

This Martini comes with a black olive, of course! No maraschino cherry at The Wulfshead. No, sir.

Black will always be the color that defines style and sophistication. There is an undeniable mystic allure to it. As the bartender put it: "it definitely has a place in the world of spirits."

And now, for the gentlelady from Malibu, all together now...

What?

... Yes, there have been occasional side effects associated with the consumption of Lightning Grass.

They are subjective and can be quite unpredictable.

Why do you ask, sir?

Lightning Grass

It's not alcoholic at all.

It is far more potent than that: it's tea!

There is a sophisticated yet simple violet flavor to it.
But do "not o'erlook the modest flower
That makes the woods of April bright."

Many places will use artificial flavorings to flavor their teas,
not The Wulfshead.

The bartender says it was collected from
"a bank whereon the wild thyme blows
Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows
Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine,
With sweet musk-roses, and with eglantine:
There sleeps Titania some time of the night,
Lull'd in these flowers with dances and delight:
And there the snake throws her enamell'd skin,
Weed wide enough to wrap a fairy in."

I think he was putting me on.

Be that as it may: it is a most entrancing drink.

Allow Me to Introduce Myself

I'm certainly postmodern, but I'm not really a sleaze. I'm just drawn that way. I'm flattered by the invitation, but I always feel a little out of place in these snazzy, up-scale establishments. But what the heck... mix me up a pan-galactic gargleblaster. I hear those'll take the edge off.

About the video: I saw this on MTV back in the mid 90's, and bought the album on the strength of this one song. The album version is different- not better or worse, just different. The album (Sneaker Pimps, Becoming X) as a whole is strong, but I just think this song is perfect.

The Ancient Art of Drink Mixing

Many ancient arts are viewed as a form of spiritual practice. This is true, of course, of many well respected traditions, including chadō (the Japanese tea ceremony), calligraphy, and various martial arts from karate-do to iaido, but the idea is almost overwhelming here within the bartending community, and so it is whispered that The Wulfshead's drink-mixing tradition is a practice which may take one closer to enlightenment.

Case in point: drink-mixing just like Iaidō and various kata from other styles or schools can have exotic names: Moon Rises Over Water, Folding the Fan, Grapevine Twines, Lizard in the Thornbush, Whirlwind on the Mountain . . . And it often takes a competent bartender or an experienced martial artist to tell which is which.

However, one had better keep in mind that while different drinks can help evoke one's spirit, they are not the spirit itself.

Suffice it to say that some drinkers just look prettier than others.

Consider this:...

A "Green Dragon" is an alcoholic beverage made by leaching the leaves or stems of the cannabis plant in a high-proof alcohol, most commonly vodka. The THC dissolves into the alcohol resulting in a dark green or brown liquid.

This is a "Green Dragon" and next to it is a "Dancing Buddha":

And this is Chad Vader after one "Green Dragon Dancing with the Buddha."

Any questions?
