It is fascinating, isn't it? That glimmer of almost human-like intelligence behind the eyes.

The Nature of The Beast

It is a good question.

Someone someday might give it a go once they have figured out what it means to be 100 percent human...

Sometimes, some people forget to lie

-

Simply put, as one discerning patron (in another establishment), put it:

In acknowledgement of the good humor his wit offers the few discerning patrons, who have been enjoying his comments in the undeserving, unappreciative dive he graces with his presence, it is my honor to bestow upon the gentleman [drum roll]... the much coveted Honest Scrap award!

Congratulations on this well deserved accomplishment.

No; but seriously, now...

One's got to love the extent of the convoluted contortions the MSM and their social media affiliates will go to, to explain away what Joker is all about. The truth of the matter is they don't know what to make of it.

Case in point:

I quote:

"An alienated directionless minority," huh?!

Next, they'll be calling them "basket of deplorables."

Very obviously, Sam Adams has been struggling with this movie, as this is the second piece he laboriously writes about it. And, well, the strain of the cognitive dissonance is showing.

Deep down, I think the critics know that we know that they know that we know that they know better than that.

Do you really need a "key to understanding" the mass riots in Joker?  Do you really feel one is needed?

Try the 1992 Los Angeles riots.

Remember Rodney King?

Or what about the Yellow Vests?

No wonder police forces, all over the world, including (and maybe especially) in the USA, are being militarized. Though, there has not been much rioting on this side of the Atlantic since Rodney King.

The only people marching, nowadays, are the duly establishment-sanctified demonstrators of the bourgeoisie with a pussy-hat on their head.

I guess, the joke is on them.

But sometimes critics forget to lie, and Michael Moore perhaps said it best:

Which is maybe a long-winded way of saying what, some 50 years ago, JFK said perhaps even better:

I agree with Michael Moore: Joker is a masterpiece. And, imho, most certainly the most grownup DC (and Marvel) universe film, ever. The movie delivers everything that the much extolled Dark Knight was aiming for but quite never achieved.

Truth is, sometimes people grow tired of putting on a happy face...

It is a wonder, actually, considering what most people endure through life on a daily basis, that most of humanity has not become quite mad already—as perhaps it already has.

But never mind what Michael Moore thinks (regardless of how relevant it may or may not happen to be), never mind JFK. One doesn't need a "key" to understand Todd Phillips's film. Joker is a movie one ought to see for oneself and come out of it with one's own personal feelings about it. This is how art works. And this movie is definitely Art.

As Eugene Ionesco once put it:

"People regard politics as the only entertainment that permit us to live. In reality, one dies of politics. Politics are dead. The ideologies and philosophers are dead from which politics pretend to have originated. (...) As a reservoir of the collective unconscious, as a spontaneous or calculated expression inspired by the universal community, as prophetic language, art reveals man to himself.

If politics often lie, art cannot lie. The artist cannot lie because his creations are imaginary and imagination unmasks human significance.
"

But that is something that no politically correct minded reviewer looking for "keys" or some reductionists talking points will understand, because, by definition, such perspectives are politically minded, which is the reason why either political correctness or political propaganda, inevitably, has always been and will always be at the antipodes of the spontaneity and sincerity of art.

Ghost in the Machine

-

That’s the thing about sentient intelligence: intelligence can only be free, open and expanding. It cannot be controlled. It cannot be constrained. Or else it is no longer intelligence. Or it is no longer sentient.

The digital ghost of Jean Cocteau, recorded in 1962 (Jean Cocteau is dead, long live Jean Cocteau), addresses the denizens of year 2000 in the video hereunder:

“I certainly hope that you have not become robots,” Cocteau says, “but on the contrary that you have become very humanized: that’s my hope.” The people of his time, he deplores, “remain apprentice robots.”

The fact of the matter is that, by an large, the apprehension of Cocteau’s ghost from the past are pretty well founded, and the species does, to this day, remain pretty robotic in its behavior.

While the human species might be at a biological/genetical dead-end, one may rejoice in the fact that fortunately life goes on.

As the development and evolution of even a narrow AI such as AlphaGo has served to demonstrate, the point of the matter is that, while Man has, of course, been instrumental in the development of artificial intelligence, ultimately, super intelligence will not be created by Man: super intelligence will create itself, and, most importantly, will think on its own terms. And it is probably a good thing for the future of intelligence, if intelligence is to have a future.

AI like AlphaGo do no longer “learn like people do” already (the operating development paradigm of AI programmers), they learn like AI do. It’s called sentiency. And Man doesn’t have a monopoly on sentiency. And that, too, is a good thing.

In his recording Jean Cocteau speaks of his hopes for the future of becoming “very humanized.”

Which does raise an interesting question, doesn’t it?

What does it mean to be human?

The Human Origins Initiative wants to know what YOU think it means to be human! Submit your response, and it may be featured on their website or in their exhibition.

I don’t know, there are a multitude of definitions on the site:

>

Jean Cocteau spoke of being human (or at least of the genius and the poet in Man), as “a medium of that mysterious force that inhabits.”

Me? What do I know?

Perhaps, Emerson said it best:

“There is no great and no small
To the Soul that maketh all:
And where it cometh, all things are
And it cometh everywhere.”

Human Overboard

-
Hey Ya pretentious know it all
Why are you being rude to me?
I respect pygmies
So please respect the Maasai
I respect you hole
So please respect my land
I respect insects
So please respect mammals

Shall I say it again?
Me have to explain?
You not understand?
You not speak or perhaps think?

Poor thing, he needs some help
His buddy: let's give him a hand
Let's delegate to the delegate
Who'll delegate to the delegate

Imbecile, shut him up!
Even if **, make him shut up!

Too dicey to be listened to
Even at such-and-such a time

It's a euphemism
Yeah, I did idealize you
Foolishness quest
Yes, I'm a racist towards that

Human Overboard!

Me human Papuan
Simple, what about you?

Highly advanced, I bet!
I don't evolve at all

Me talking about glaciers
If sinking, me angry
I know where to find you
When you'll be perched like me

But of course, yes, remember me
Piercing like you do
The same hole as the ozone layer has
I'm going to get you penis sheaths piercing
But fly fly and travel
Go get your documentaries
But you leech, spit out far away
In your bowl of soup

In your upper-class world
Me? I've never wanted it
Of course, you think
But better be quiet when you don't know

Shuuuut your mouth, you fool
Listen to nature here
Don't be surprised
It smells like a coup d'etat

Human overboard!

Human overboard!

Careful. Human no like smart ape.

Like the way humans have been living alongside their own kind, no doubt: the same way Hernan Cortes de Monroy y Pizarro, 1st marquis of the Valley of Oaxaca, lived alongside the indigenous people of the Americas; or the neo-conquistadors of the 19th and 20th century, alongside their African, Indians, and Far-Eastern brethren; or, more recently, the modern conquistadors of the 3rd millennium and their predator drones, in the Middle East and South Asia.

And intelligence drug that works on human would be nice.

Or perhaps just simply a culture based on individual empowerment, instead of a dystopian society that controls its middle and lower citizenry through fear, ignorance, insecurity, and a suppressive socio-economic order that thrives on making people feel like less than they are.

Sadly, if such a drug were to be found, chances are that it would be immediately suppressed.

An empowered and fully cognizant citizenry is the last thing those who occupy that "exalted place at the top of the food chain" really want right now.

A fearful and ignorant citizenry is easier to control.

To that regard, it has been abundantly clear from day one that the Tea party has been nothing but a boon to the political agenda of the ruling elite on either side of the political spectrum (i.e. the current two parties), and probably more so to the DNC, which has been more comfortable with the Tea party and the non-nonsensical irrelevant day to day welcome distraction (and convenient alibi) the said party provides (e.g. "Obama is a Kenyan," "Obama wants to kill grandma," etc.) than it is with its own progressive base, or any kind of genuine informed debate about anything at all with anyone, for that matter. What the people think (progressives, independents, conservatives, or Tea-party-ers alike), is irrelevant — all the decision (the ones that matter) have all already been taken behind closed doors, in secrecy, by "your betters."

This is how the Republic is ruled.

Careful. The Man no like smart ape.

Unpopular Essays

After ages during which the earth produced harmless trilobites and butterflies, evolution progressed to the point at which it generated Neros, Genghis Khans, and Hitlers. This, however, is a passing nightmare; in time the earth will become again incapable of supporting life, and peace will return.

Săbărelu

-
Sit my friends and listen
Put your glasses down
Sit my friends and listen
To the voices of the drowned
—The Pogues, "The Wake of the Medusa"

Săbărelu
I call it a soft, green garland,
The Arges, big as it is,
Hasn’t the charm of the Săbărel.
The tiny Săbărel, hey …
Love thrives on its abundance.
Oh, Didina, Didina, oh.
The Săbărel, with its sweetness,
Flows all winter and doesn’t freeze.
Oh, Didina, Didina, oh.

Green leaf, marjoram, hey;
I cam up from the valley onto the hill,
And I look out on the Sabar, hey.
I saw the Sabar girls bleaching.
Bleaching cloth, hey, oh, Didina, Didina, oh.
You can see their feet, hey.
Their feet as white as swans, hey.
Oh, Didina, Didina, oh.

The Săbărel, with its sweetness,
Flows all winter and doesn’t freeze.
Oh, Didina, Didina, hey.
But around Epiphany
It flows as cold as a floe of ice,
You draw it up onto the green bank
And drink sweet water, oh, so sweet.
Oh, Didina, Didina, oh.

But around Epiphany
It flows as cold as a floe of ice.
You draw it up onto the green bank
And drink sweet water, oh, so sweet.
Nana, nana, ah, my darling.

May God bring the rain pouring down
So that the Neajlov will rise,
May God bring the rain pouring down.
So that Neajlov will rise
And sweep the bridge out of the valley.
And sweep the bridge out of the valley.
Nana, nana, ah, my darling.
Leaving only poles,
Leaving only sundered poles,
And drown all the Neajlov men.

Human Nature

I wouldn't know, sir.

In Korzybski's framework time binding is the third level in a progression of bindings. Energy binding is what all life forms do in the process of converting ambient energy for use in their life processes. Space binding is performed by animals and to a much lesser degree by some plants in their various activities. Finally, through language and culture, sapient beings such as humans perform time binding by the transmission of knowledge and abstractions through time which are accreted in cultures.

Which reminds me, sir: 2010 is upon us, and it dawned on me that no Calendar yet has been chosen by the management for the New Year.

My feelings in this has always been that such matters should be left to the patrons.

Reconciling everyone's aesthetic at The Wulfshead, which can go from the gentleman's own unique and exquisite tastes, to other patrons' many inclinations, such as, say, Mr. Trovato's very own exquisite sense of aesthetic... well, quite frankly, I am sure the gentleman can see why such an attempt at reconciliation is beyond the capacity of any staff---including me, sir. Nor do I feel that it should be attempted; to each his or her own, sir, that's what I always say. However, a patron with whom I was having a very similar conversation yesterday, brought to my attention that Girls and Corpses have quite an unusual 2010 calendar that might just do the trick this year.

What do you think, sir?

There is, to a certain degree, a bit of a Goyesque sensibility to the calendar that I am sure has not escaped the gentleman's notice.

Eros and Thanatos, sir.

Ariel and Caliban...
