Why don't they leave?

It's not uncommon to hear "Why do women stay in abusive relationships?" or "Why don't they leave?"

The main reason "they stay" is they are too afraid to leave—they feel they have nowhere to go.

I must say I find it a little disconcerting to find similar feelings of learned helplessness being echoed (and/or willfully propagated) inside the political forums of news websites, on threads very much like this one:

It is a sad state of affairs for America, and indeed for democracy, when apparently, and by jatrig's own admission, above, Liberals in this country should feel that the only two options open to them is to either stay in the abusive relationship they perceive themselves to be in, or else end up "with a pimp."

There's got to be more to the word than this.

Or is there?

Maybe someone ought to write a self-help book about this.

That being said, I thought Jon Stewart's piece was spot on, as usual (no reason really for anyone to go ballistic over it—Jeez! when did the Dems lose their sense of humor?):

Moving on? But where to? And how?

He feels his critics on the left are silly and naive when they argue that the key to victory is simply for the party to turn out more of its base.

"There is no base!" he once exclaimed famously during one of his familiar flare of temper.

Lucidity or self-fulfilling prophecy? I do not know, sir.

He, you may have surmised, is outgoing White House Chief of staff Rahm Emanuel.

As I said before, I don't know much about politics. If you ask me, sir, my uninformed guess would be that telling the base it is irrelevant---the Small-Donor fallacy, sir---does not look much like the kind of change the people who voted for Obama had been led to hope for.

Cicero (106–43 bc) said it first, "the sinews of war are infinite money." And Rahm Emanuel knows how to raise money for the party---that's what he does, sir---and there aren't many better places to find it than Wall Street. Fund-raising was the gentleman's job for Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign. And again in 2006---the gentleman was then head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee---he helped Democrats collect record amount of cash in their bid to retake the House of Representatives.

There are political realities...sir...or so "sensible liberals" keep informing me.

But that has always been the problem, hasn't it? I mean, the money, sir...the price of power. How can Democrats raise the kind of corporate money the party so desperately needs to survive as a major party without selling their base out to special interests?

The choice is clear:

I'd vote for him in a heartbeat.

About the possibility of him ever running for office, Clooney has said: "Run for office? No. I've slept with too many women, I've done too many drugs, and I've been to too many parties."

And that's a real shame---not the part about the women, the drugs and the parties, but the fact that he won't run.

As Kin Hubbard said..."we'd all like to vote for the best man, but he's never a candidate."

I For One Welcome Our New Robotic Empress

As is my wont, I've been sitting in the back, quietly paying attention to or ignoring the friendly chatter around the bar, as mood dictates. I must say I'm disgusted by events, frustrated and even angered. I've learned to hold my tongue when I'm angry, so I haven't been saying as much about politics and current events even at my favorite coffee shop.

Still, the fact I'm not talking much doesn't mean I'm not paying attention. It does mean that I'm more likely to post some light-hearted picture of a beautiful android space babe than a pithy, well thought-out essay on what's gone wrong and how to fix it. Right now, I'm of the opinion that our government is a tangled wreck, and that the best solution might be to recruit a bunch of beautiful android space babes to run it. It seems a safe bet they'd be more rational, logical, competent, and compassionate than the current crop of ass-hats piloting this country into oblivion.

And for those of us who might prefer leadership from androids of both sexes, don't worry: some assembly is required, but we're covered. (Both pictures above from this enjoyable post) The fact is, if we don't see real change from our leaders, and soon, we'll be going the way of...
