My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going...But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you.

Prayer of Thomas Merton

My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.

Nor do I really know myself,
and the fact that I think that I am following your will
does not mean that I am actually doing so.

But I believe that the desire to please you
does in fact please you.

And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.

And I know that if I do this

you will lead me by the right road
though I may know nothing about it.

  1. I'm experiencing a number of synchronicities at The Wulfshead. The references to Merton's Thoughts In Solitude is another one. I like all-night vigils from time to time, no matter what the religion. But from Palm Sunday on through Easter Season, it's Christianity and nothing else. For the first time in a few years, I participated in a vigil prior to Easter sunrise. I was alone in the church at 4 AM and after more than an hour of meditation, I stretched my legs a bit by walking up to the choir area on either side of the altar. There, on our music rack area, someone had left this very book which I never had seen before. Right down on the spot I sat and began to page through it...but found some help I need at the very beginning. What a wondrous meditative and prayerful book! Thank you Ben.
